In another advance for organic agriculture at the USDA, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack appointed Miles McEvoy to lead the National Organic Program.

McEvoy acquired a reputation as a strong advocate for ensuring organic integrity while serving more than 20 years as head of the Organic Certification Program in Washington State. McEvoy said protecting organic integrity will remain a top priority in his new post.

“I am committed to upholding the organic standards and enforcing the National Organic Program,” said McEvoy.  “Thanks to all the organic farmers that are implementing the vision of a sustainable agriculture system that takes care of the land and its people.”

Organic Farming Research Foundation Executive Director Bob Scowcroft said McEvoy’s appointment was a sound move by Secretary Vilsack.

“Miles has straddled the worlds of business, government, and farmer advocacy with great skill and professionalism. We are happy to see him appointed and look forward to working with him,” said Scowcroft.

Vilsack also acted to make the National Organic Program an independent program within the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service. The move is seen as yet another signal that the new administration is actively working to strengthen organic agriculture’s standing within the USDA.
