Special Edition SCOAR Bulletin

April 08, 2009

SCOAR is a collaboration of producers and scientists whose mission is to plan and promote research and information exchange for understanding and improving organic agricultural systems.

USDA Seeks Stakeholder Ideas for New Research,
Education and Extension Agenda

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is looking for new ideas from researchers, farmers and others to help develop a "roadmap" sketching the direction of its agenda for agricultural research, education and extension. Creating such a roadmap was mandated by the 2008 Farm Bill.

According to the Federal Register notice soliciting written comments from stakeholders, “The Roadmap will identify current trends and constraints and major opportunities and gaps that no single entity within the Department of Agriculture would be able to address individually.”

This request for ideas represents a unique opportunity to ensure that organic research and education issues find a prominent spot on the nation’s agricultural science agenda.

Comments must be received by May 31, 2009.  We hope you will take the time to respond. Submissions must include the title “Roadmap” and the number REE-2009-0001.

More details on contributing to USDA’s roadmap may be found at: http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2009/E9-7252.htm

OFRF is working on its own contribution to the roadmap. We will include details in the May SCOAR bulletin, scheduled for release May 19.

This is a Special Edition in a series of occasional bulletins providing selected information on organic research programs, positions, funding, and reports, as well as news about SCOAR itself. Original items may be reproduced with attribution to OFRF. These reports are sent via email to registered SCOAR participants.
