Four Season Gardening in Maine

In a recent article in Wicked Local Brewster, organic farmer Eliot Coleman explains how he grows fresh produce twelve months a year on his Maine farm. With just an acre and a half of land, Coleman grosses over $150,000 without charging outrageous prices.

The author of “The Four Season Harvest,” and several other books, Coleman says his success is the result of a lot of hard work, paying attention over the years, and using all the information that is freely available in books and on the web. 

Oh, and he doesn’t shut down his garden in October.

"If you put on compost, plant green manures as cover crops, practice crop rotation, all thousand-year-old technologies that work well, you can make a decent living,” says Coleman, adding that anyone can do the same in their own backyard. “The system is scale neutral. If compost will work on a thousand-acre farm, it’ll work in a 1,000-square foot backyard.”

“The four season harvest came about because as a New Englander who every September gave up my business to California I said no,” explains Coleman. He uses cold frames and other methods of plant protection to grow leaf lettuce, mustard greens, kale, radishes, arugula, turnips, beet greens, and, “the sweetest carrots you’ve ever eaten.”
