Making Farms Safer with Conservation Practices

Category:

Co-Managing Farm Stewardship with Food Safety GAPs and Conservation Practices: A Grower’s and Conservationist’s Handbook is now available. The handbook was co-written by Jo Ann Baumgartner, Executive Director of the Wild Farm Alliance, and partially funded through a research grant from OFRF.

A valuable resource for growers and conservationists, the handbook describes many opportunities for making farms safer by reducing pathogen presence with conservation practices and food safety Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs).

In addition to the handbook, the group has published highlights of the FDA’s Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption, and how this rule affects diversity farms and surrounding landscapes. This rule, published by the FDA in November 2015, is one of seven major regulations being used to enforce the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

Everyone at OFRF would like to congratulate Jo Ann and her colleagues on its completion. We are honored to have played a small role in making this information available. Nice work!
