OFRF Awards Six New Research Grants

May 23, 2016 - OFRF is pleased to announce its research grant awards for 2016. Determinations were made by OFRF's Board of Directors, which is made up of organic agriculture researchers, industry leaders, and farmers. Six projects were chosen from the many highly credible and relevant research grant proposals submitted.

We would like to thank Driscoll's, General Mills, Lundberg Family Farms, UNFI Foundation and everyone who has made a contribution to OFRF. We are also grateful to the companies that provided support for these grants by donating to the "Your 2 Cents" program, a collaboration between OFRF and Rodale Institute. This generous support of our research program allows us to continue providing cutting edge information to organic farmers.

Grantees were selected based on the relevance of their proposed research project to fostering the improvement or adoption of organic farming systems, as well as ways in which organic farmers or ranchers can utilize proposed results in their operations. All OFRF-funded research must involve farmers or ranchers in project design and implementation, take place on certified organic land, and include strong education and outreach components.

“In 2015, OFRF conducted a national survey of organic farmers,” explains Diana Jerkins, Research Program Director for OFRF. “The projects we selected address farmers’ top concerns as identified through the survey and listening sessions we conducted across the country. Weed and pest management, soil health, and water management during drought and flooding emerged as top concerns for today’s organic farmers.”

Since its founding in 1990, OFRF has awarded 332 grants to organic researchers and farmers, investing more than $3,000,000. All research results are freely available in our online database at ofrf.org.

OFRF's next Request for Proposals will be released in the fall of 2016 for 2017 projects.
