Battle Creek, MI, (January 13, 2012), When it comes to galvanizing organic advocates for Farm Bill 2012, Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF) leads the charge. OFRF is calling upon more organic farmers, urban agriculturists, food justice advocates and health-conscious consumers to show rigorous support for organic representation in Farm Bill 2012 to Senator Stabenow at the Michigan Family Farms Conference on Saturday, January 14, 2012.
A large and diverse group of organic advocates will pack the halls at Lakeview High School in Battle Creek where a member of Senator Debbie Stabenow's staff plans to present a workshop: 'How the 2012 Farm Bill Will Affect You.' Concerned citizens can shape the future of America's food system and impress upon Senator Stabenow, who chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee, how essential increased organic representation is to the federal Farm Bill in 2012.
"Critical Farm Bill programs such as the Organic Research and Extension Initiative, the Environmental Quality Incentives Program's Organic Initiative, the Conservation Stewardship Program and the National Organic Program all face uncertain futures," said Udi Lazimy, National Policy Organizer at OFRF. "Michigan farmers care tremendously about building a robust agricultural economy that supports conservation and public health, and they know that organic is the key to that future."
Negotiations are well under way to determine the 2012 Farm Bill. Substantial budget cuts are being proposed to many important programs that benefit organic agriculture and conservation in Michigan. Senator Stabenow will experience first hand how vital organic agriculture policy is to her home state. Attendees will impress upon Senator Stabenow the importance of her commitment to hold public listening sessions and field hearings throughout 2012.
