SUMMARY:Reducing Feed Costs in Organic Pig Production
DESCRIPTION:This event has passed. Watch the recording here. \nFeed costs represent 65 to75% of the total cost to produce a market hog and have a significant impact on profitability of organic pig farming. Utilizing grains harvested from winter cover crops as a feed ingredient for pigs can potentially protect the environment and reduce feed costs of organic pig production. Join OFRF\, in partnership with eOrganic for this enlightening discussion that will help farmers improve organic pig production efficiency and make decisions on raising small grains for organic pigs. \nRegister here. \nThe webinar will showcase research by Dr. Yuzhi Li\, a professor of organic swine production at the University of Minnesota’s West Central Research and Outreach Center and include her insights on best practices in organic pig production and key factors for saving production costs. Dr. Li will discuss how supplementing hybrid rye or camelina press-cake in pig diets can influence pig growth\, pork quality\, and potential savings on feed and bedding. The webinar will help farmers improve organic pig production efficiency and make decisions on raising small grains for organic pigs. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:2025 Farmer Led Trial Applications Open
DESCRIPTION:Are you an organic or transitioning farmer or rancher who wants to test out a new agricultural practice on your farm?  \nOFRF’s Farmer-Led Trials program provides farmers with funding and technical assistance to investigate and learn about solutions to their most pressing production challenges. Applications for the 2025 season open Oct 14th – Dec 1st.\nOrganic farming and ranching takes dedication\, financial investment\, and a great deal of trial and error to adapt to a growing array of pest\, disease\, and soil health challenges.  In order to address the challenges certified organic and transitioning-to-organic producers face\, OFRF’s FLT program will provide support for on-farm learning trials aimed at testing new practices\, inputs\, varieties\, or animal breeds that can improve profitability and environmental sustainability\, leading to more resilient organic farms and ranches. \nVisit https://ofrf.org/research/farmer-led-research-trials/ to learn more about the program.

SUMMARY:Seeds of Success Webinar - NRCS Organic Practice 823 Strategies and Best Practices
DESCRIPTION:This event has passed. Watch the recording here. \nThe Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF)\, is partnering with the Organic Farmers Association (OFA)\, and National Organic Coalition (NOC) to host a series of virtual farmer-to-farmer networking sessions\, Seeds of Success. These facilitated events will be interactive\, informal spaces for farmers to share their challenges and successes\, and will give farmers an opportunity to have open conversations on topics most relevant to them. \nDuring this session of the Seeds of Success series\, OFA will explore NRCS Organic Practice 823 on July 24\, 2024\, at 2PM ET. \nThe National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has many programs to help farmers convert to organic farming operations. The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) is a conservation program that helps farmers\, ranchers and forest landowners integrate conservation into working lands. Under EQIP\, Organic Transition Initiative 823 (OTI) is specifically meant to help those transitioning to organic operations\, by cost-sharing and providing technical support on practices organic and transitioning farmers want to implement on their farms. \nThis program is relatively new\, and a little different than other NRCS practices. Join us to hear directly from ag professionals and farmers about their experiences with 823 and their ideas regarding how to best utilize this valuable conservation planning tool. \nRegister here: https://actionnetwork.org/events/seeds-of-success-webinar-nrcs-organic-practice-823-strategies-and-best-practices/.

SUMMARY:Developing Organic Crop Budgets for Producers Moving to Organic Production
DESCRIPTION:This event has passed. Watch the recording here. \nJoin us at 2 pm Eastern (1PM Central\, 12PM Mountain\, 11AM Pacific Time) on Wednesday June 26th\, 2024 \nThis webinar will showcase a crop budging tool that organic crop producers can use to evaluate both the cost of production and expected net return of organic production for various crops. The budgeting tool can also be used to compute the costs and returns for producers looking to make a transition into organic production. The featured tool makes it easy to develop a crop budget for almost any crop and production practice including both organic and conventional crop production. The budgeting tool has a built-in database of inputs and machinery costs. Producers just need to pick what operations and inputs are needed to produce a crop and the budgeting tool will calculate the cost per acre to produce that crop and the expected net return. This webinar will walk through the process of developing an organic crop budget and how producers can modify this process to fit their particular operation. \nBio\nDr. Gregg Ibendahl is an associate professor at Kansas State University. His appointment is in Extension specializing in farm management and agricultural finance. Dr. Ibendahl grew up on a grain/beef farm in southern Illinois and has worked in both private industry as well as academia. He enjoys analyzing farmer profitability issues and helping farmers make better decisions. DESCRIPTION:This event has passed. Watch the recording here.  \n  \nThe National Organic Coalition (NOC) is partnering with the Organic Farmers Association (OFA)\, and Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF)\, to host a series of virtual farmer-to-farmer networking sessions\, Seeds of Success. These facilitated events will be interactive\, informal spaces for farmers to share their challenges and successes\, and will give farmers an opportunity to have open conversations on topics most relevant to them. \n  \nJoin us at 1 pm ET on January 30\, 2024 for the second session of the series\, Demystifying the National Organic Standards Board: What it is\, how it works\, and how it impacts your farm! \n  \nThis will be an interactive networking session for organic and transitioning farmers\, where a panel of farmers and advocates will demystify the NOSB. Panelists will explain the role of the NOSB in shaping organic standards and allowed materials\, the process the Board uses to make decisions\, and explain how your comments can make a difference in Board decisions. Your input matters! The NOSB makes decisions that determine what you can and can’t do on your farm – we’ll explain how to provide input to the Board in a meaningful way\, answer your questions\, and share ideas about how to lift up farmer voices in the NOSB process. \n  \nRegister here: https://www.nationalorganiccoalition.org/events

DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about successful farmer – researcher collaborations at our virtual Networking Session on October 25th\, 2pm EST.\n\n\nHave you ever wondered how to connect with a farmer or researcher to conduct on-farm research? This Researcher- Farmer Virtual Networking event will highlight the successes and challenges of engaging in farmer-researcher partnerships and focus on building positive outcomes for farmer and researcher collaboration in organic agriculture. \nJoin us on October 25th at 2pm ET for the first informal virtual networking event held via Zoom\, the Seeds of Success: Farmer-Researcher Networking Session. \nWe will be joined by four speakers that have participated in successful organic research projects funded by USDA NIFA. Two researchers: Julie Grossman and Eric Gallandt\, and their farmer collaborators\, Seth Kroeck and KaZoua Berry\, will share details on their experience and the process of engaging in on-farm research. \nThe session will begin with a brief introduction on USDA-NIFA organic programs and feature facilitated conversations on the topic of collaborative farmer-researcher projects that will support information sharing and identify possibilities for future research partnerships. \n \nFunding for this series is provided by a cooperative agreement between OFRF and USDA- NIFA to highlight research investments made through both OREI and ORG grant programs.
