ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND
The mission of the Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF) is to foster the improvement and widespread adoption of organic farming systems. OFRF envisions a future where organic farming is the leading form of agriculture. Since its founding in 1990, OFRF has sponsored organic farming research, education, and outreach to support organic and transitioning farmers across North America. This work is complemented by efforts to share our findings with policymakers, agricultural institutions, and federal agencies to support broader change and advance the organic sector.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The OFRF Policy/Advocacy Fellow is a full-time, non-exempt, one-year position (with the possibility of a longer-term extension) based in Washington, D.C. This position is eligible for benefits. All applicants must be eligible to work in the US. This position does not offer visa sponsorship.
The Policy/Advocacy Fellow’s role is to coordinate and implement legislative and regulatory campaigns that support the needs of organic farmers. The fellow will monitor federal policy, educate policymakers about the benefits of organic farming, advocate for the needs of organic growers, and engage farmers and researchers in the policy-making process. This position reports to the Senior Policy & Programs Manager.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Monitor federal policy (legislative and regulatory) as it pertains to organic farming.
- Meet regularly with policymakers within the Executive Branch (primarily USDA) and Congress to educate them about the benefits of organic farming systems.
- Educate and advocate for federal programs and funding to meet the research, education, conservation, and technical needs of organic farmers.
- Cultivate bi-partisan political support for organic farming and agriculture research.
- Represent OFRF at meetings with a diverse array of partners, including research, grower, and advocacy groups and coalitions.
- Develop written positions/recommendations on key policy issues.
- Write blogs or articles about policy issues.
- Coordinate grassroots organizing efforts and engagement.
- Keep OFRF leadership and staff apprised of current issues.
- Monitor and report on progress toward goals.
- Manage policy-related contacts in OFRF database.
- Support Senior Policy & Program Manager in staffing the Policy Committee of the OFRF Board of Directors.
- Other related duties, as assigned by your supervisor.
SKILLS AND QUALITIES
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in sustainable agriculture, sustainable food systems, policy, or a related field.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in federal food or agriculture policy.
- Commitment to working in collaboration with a diverse array of organizations and Congressional Offices
- Knowledge of organic agriculture systems.
- Deep understanding of federal legislative and regulatory processes.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to adhere to strict deadlines.
- Stellar communication skills, including verbal and written communication, as well as visual presentations.
- Attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
- Proficiency with common software applications, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Salesforce experience is a plus.
- Experience working and communicating collaboratively in a remote setting using the Google Suite of programs and Asana project management software.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to travel to meetings and events.
COMPENSATION and BENEFITS
The starting salary is between $72-80k, depending on experience. OFRF offers a competitive benefits package and a great work environment with lots of flexibility. We look for co-workers who can have fun and are committed to working for a cause we love.
